Our company focuses on one of the basic human needs: shelter. On houses, neighbourhoods and every possible residential need there may be in the countries where we operate as an area developer: the Netherlands, France and Germany. We conduct extensive research into these needs, which forms the basis of everything we develop and build.
BPD is a leading European area developer. Today, over one million Europeans live in homes and areas that we have realised. We believe in creating ‘living environments’, areas that are alive in their own right. That offer space and peace of mind and also encourage activities on the streets outside.
Our name is affiliated with large urban expansion areas but also with small-scale residential projects in towns and (inner) cities. The field in which we work is both very large and very small and we are area and a project developer in one. With nearly 30 regional offices in economically strong areas we are firmly rooted in the local housing markets.
We have an exceptional professional network and our profound knowledge of consumers allows us to adapt to and incorporate local residential needs like no other. BPD, established in 1946, is a part of Rabobank. In the Netherlands and in Germany we operate under the name BPD, in France as BPD Marignan.

BPD was born in the Netherlands and raised in Europe. Since our establishment 65 years ago, we have developed over 310,000 houses and residential areas. Over one million Europeans live in one of the projects that we have developed.
Post-World War II, the Netherlands was facing huge shortages, including a lack of affordable housing. Happy couples saw no other option than to postpone their wedding and newlyweds were often forced to move into the poorly insulated back room of a relative’s house. A far cry from perfection, where conversations were often hushed to whispers. It is in this setting that the idea arose to establish building funds, municipal funds meant for the financing of new housing. Bouwkas Drenthe (Building Fund Drenthe) becomes our first name.
Bouwfonds Nederlandse Gemeenten becomes our second name due to the enormous interest that is sparked throughout the country by our contribution to reducing the housing shortage.
We founded Bouwfonds Immobilienentwicklung in Germany which has since climbed to the market leader position of area and project developers and has developed over 7,000 houses.
A volatile market changes constantly and when, at the turn of the century, the Dutch government no longer considered building houses as one of its core tasks, our traditionally semi-government organisation was acquired by ABN AMRO, a major Dutch bank.
In France we acquire renowned project developer Marignan Immobilier founded in 1979, which now continues under the name Bouwfonds Marignan Immobilier. With six regional offices and fifteen local agencies. Bouwfonds Marignan Immobilier has developed nearly 30,000 houses and approximately 100,000 m2 in commercial property.
We have been a subsidiary of Rabobank since 2006– and from 2006 till 1 July 2017 as part of Rabo Real Estate Group. This ensures BPD of a strong financial position and provides a source of international knowledge and experience.
Opening Berlin office. An international presence and spread is a conscious choice by BPD. Currently we have about thirty regional offices spread throughout the growth regions of our core countries the Netherlands, France and Germany.
Rebranding to BPD, creating living environments.
On 1 July 2017 BPD has become a full subsidiary of Rabobank. As a result BPD, with a strong parent company, can form its strategy based on a powerful growth perspective.
